The Unprecedented Times –

3D Country is immaculately constructed, high energy, western-tinged post rock. I hadn’t heard of Geese prior to this listen. I went in blind, listened to the album from track one, and didn’t stop. How could I? This album is an absolute ride from start to finish. No low points, no bad tracks, no filler. The opener, “2122”, sets the listener up for what they’re about to experience. And then 3D Country is let loose.
Influences can be heard here and there, but only for a fleeting moment. At no point did I think “Oh this sounds like a _____ song.” There were only short moments of recognition (a little Parquet Courts, a little Strokes, a little Radiohead) before the band slapped me on the face and turned my attention back towards what was happening in front of me. Take the first three tracks for example. Each one pushes slightly into a different style, demonstrating the range of the band’s abilities.
The album is melodically strong, tied to the lyrical story of a wandering cowboy’s ramblings. It feels very Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. And for that reason I love it. The themes range from the strange to the beautiful. And the band often breaks into psych inspired jams that drive the project forward at full speed. Vocalist Cameron Winter has a commanding presence. One moment he’s crooning, the next he’s screaming. He has an impressive range. His theatrics make for a very enjoyable and unique listening experience. Every time I listen to this, I pick up on something new. I enjoyed the backing feminine choral vocals that appear several times across these 11 tracks.
3D Country is grandiose and ambitious and it pays off. A strong group of songs with dazzling melodies, strong lyricism, and a frontman that absolutely sells the absurdity and eccentricity of it all. Geese is a relatively new band, with just one other album under their belt. I am a fan now. And I eagerly await their next project. For now, I’ll listen to this another hundred times. I am a fan now.
