Samia – “Bovine Excision”
A
Somehow this new single from Samia manages to be equal parts fresh and a return to form. It shares elements of her excellent debut album, The Baby, from an instrumentation perspective. I love the dynamics and the progression of this new single. It really builds in a beautiful way. Thrilled to see what’s next for Samia.
Japanese Breakfast – “Orlando in Love”
B+
Japanese Breakfast is a great artist, but sometimes the way she sings her vowels takes a little…getting used to. This track didn’t click for me right away and it’s almost certainly because of the way she annunciates lines like “an ideal woman”. BUT the instrumentals are gorgeous and this track grew on me.
Bad Bunny – “NUEVAYoL”
C
I was briefly very excited when I heard some straight up, classic latin horns and drums at the start of the newest Bad Bunny album. But I am so sorry, I genuinely have no interest in 1 full hour of reggaeton. It’s not for me. So when it turned out that the sample was indeed just a sample, I wilted like a flower left in the closet. The album cover is amazing though. Other than that, I just don’t think I have the frame of reference to review this album. Sorry.
Dirty Projectors – “Uninhabitable Earth, Paragraph One”
B
This song started and I listened for thirty seconds or so and thought, “yeah this sure is a Dirty Projectors song”. It has that familiar, grating sort of lilting flow to it that usually grows on me. Thankfully after those first thirty seconds, there’s a better song behind it. I appreciate the sincerity and the genuine nature of this song. There’s a real sense of concern and urgency that I enjoyed. As much as you can enjoy a song about the end of all things, anyway.
Ethel Cain – “Amber Waves”
B
Only Ethel Cain would make the lead single from her upcoming album eleven minutes of ambient, spacey, angst. It is good. But you really have to be in the mood for this sort of thing. Today, I’m not.
Ringo Starr, Molly Tuttle – “Look Up”
C
Ringo is hard to hate. The man is a legend, so when he releases a single and the cover art is him in monochrome wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat and…what appears to be like a nylon jacket over a black t-shirt…you listen. We owe him that. I don’t know. This song is like…fine.
Wallows – “Your New Favorite Song”
C
My new favorite song this is not.
Truman Sinclair – “Black Train”
A
This guy is like if Alex G’s country tinged stuff never took a weird turn into vocoded screaming or something. His songs have that same general aura to them, but they’re just nice and sweet. Like a cold Snapple in a glass bottle – which you can’t get anymore but for some reason Yoo-Hoo, which is OWNED BY SNAPPLE, still does it.
