Some part of will always love Halloween, despite not dressing up, going out, or even remembering that it’s today until I saw someone dressed like an absolute moron. It’s fun. It’s a beautiful time of year. And my favorite way to celebrate is with a little spooky music. So here are some SCARY albums that will put you in the Halloween spirit. Haha. BOO!
Dead Man’s Bones – Dead Man’s Bones
In recent years, people have been rediscovering this as “the weird, unknown band Ryan Gosling was in”. But they deserve a little more credit than that. Is it weird? Absolutely. But it’s a Halloween album through and through and with tongue-in-cheek songs like “My Body’s a Zombie For You”, it’s hard not to love. “In The Room Where You Sleep” is a genuinely haunting tune that stays on rotation for me all year long. I highly recommend this one.
Tambourines (Weekend Voodoo, Boy Deco) – Tamboween
I genuinely can’t recall how I came across this album, as it’s not very well known whatsoever. But it’s the spooky side project of Boy Deco, an indie rocker with a real talent for atmospheric music. This album is also made specifically to fill out the unfortunately sparse catalogue of Halloween specific music. “Wolfman”, the album’s closer, is an absolute meatball of a song. That’s a new thing I’m starting. Can you spread that around? “Damn dude, this thing is a MEATBALL.”
The Animals – The Animals
This album opens with “House Of The Rising Sun”, which is not just a great song, but is definitely Halloween coded in my opinion. But the rest of this album makes use of an organ sound that just has an undeniable haunted house vibe. But unlike Dead Man’s Bones, this feels more like a fun Halloween party for ghosts who’s unfinished business is doing a keg stand or something.
Creedence Clearwater Revival – Green River
Creedence Clearwater Revival’s special brand of swamp blues-rock is perfect for spooky season. John Fogerty sings like a cool animated frog with a hat and a pipe in the corner of his mouth. And if “Bad Moon Rising” isn’t a Halloween song, I’ll eat my own head.
Lankum – False Lankum
This one’s for all you unhinged freaks who want to ruin a perfectly good party with your “eclectic” taste. Lankum’s 2023 release is a collection of dark, sad twists on the traditional Irish folk tune. Even the uplifting songs are tinged with deep sadness and despair. There’s a dark element to this album that makes for an engaging listen, but would have your friends remove your aux privileges.
