Quentin Avatar

Here’s some songs. Some stuff.

TOLEDO – “Zelda”

A

You know I love me some TOLEDO. This is one of my favorite singles of theirs in recent memory. It gives me that indescribable feeling that I got from a lot of their debut record. Loving the inclusion of the banjo. Loving those subtle horns in the background. This one’s a beauty.

Cameron Winter – “Vines”

A

Cameron Winter is one of my favorite vocalists right now. This little solo single gives us more of a stripped back, piano ballad, and a chance to hear those vocals without the wild, awesome, freak behavior of his band, Geese. His writing is strong here too. And the strings on the back half? This is kind of a sleeper hit, or whatever they call it these days. Rizzler. Lit.

Lady Gaga – “Disease”

B

It sounds like a Lady Gaga song. The beat goes pretty hard, but otherwise it’s standard Gaga fare. To my ears, this could pretty easily be from one of her earlier albums. I’m not sure what it is about Lady Gaga that people seem to expect her to sound wildly different every time she releases new music. She’s not an “eras” artist and she never has been. This is fine. That’s about all I have to say.

Tyler, The Creator – “Noid”

B+

I have not given the new album a listen yet, but this does grab my attention. I’m not sure it blew me away, but I’m curious nonetheless. I’m waiting until I have the right state of mind to give CHROMAKOPIA the time it deserves.

Addison Rae – “Aquamarine”

C+

I’m not sure I’m ready to jump aboard the Addison Rae train just yet. Vocally, I’ve always felt like she sounds somewhat bored in her songs. I know artists like Charli xcx are trying to bring her up, but I really just don’t see it. Maybe she’ll take a real leap at some point. But so far, I can’t get behind this.

Lil Yachty

“We Ball Forever”

B+

Much like “A Cold Sunday”, this is a sound I’d love to see Lil Yachty dig deeper into. I hope this is an indication that we’re getting a full album of this kind of material. These soulful beats are like a little ear massage. I wanna curl up like a cat when I hear this.

“Cry Me A River”

B

It’s solid. Not sure it’ll stick with me but whatever.

“All Around The World”

C+

This one didn’t do much for me. I found Yachty’s delivery a little harder to listen to here. The beat was much less interesting than the other two.
